I had a '72 in the late eighties that I drove cross country twice. I sold it while I was in Korea in '93 and I still wish I had the engine and powertrain for a Ghia project car. I built a 2110cc engine for my VW that had numerous suspension and transmission mods. It was a blast around town and on the freeway. You have one of the most popular engine builds that utilizes the stock 69mm crank. Consider yourself fortunate the previous owner decided on Dell'Orto carbs vs. Weber and swapped in a Ghia or selecta-drop front end to give you disc brakes up front. If that is a plastic fuel filter I see, replace it with a metal or heavy-duty glass unit asap. If you intend to learn more about aircooled VW care and maintenance, I would suggest any book by John Muir, Gene Berg (and family) and a subscription to HotVWs (Bugs & Jugs). CB Performance in Farmersville, CA was always great to for parts, price and and customer service.
Very good score on a nicely modified and maintained aircooled VW.
